Changing Clonard

Comment from Fr Michael Murtagh CSsR

"Since coming back to Clonard as Rector in September 2008, I became acutely aware again of how Clonard Monastery and Church is a place much loved by people near and far.

Over the past 3 years we have been engaged in major renovations of the exterior of the Church which were completed in June 2009 at a total cost of £800,000. It is thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and various government agencies but most importantly the congregation of Clonard that this work has been made possible. Clonard Church is now very sound on the exterior and ready to face any storms that will come — at least weather-wise!

As our Centenary nears in 2011 we would dearly love to see the interior of the Church renovated to match the radiance of the exterior.

Again with your help this may be possible. We have recently commissioned a design team which will come up with a detailed plan and a more precise costing of all that needs to be done on the interior of Clonard Church. We are talking here about replacing the floor which is in poor repair, especially at the front of the Church, the painting of the ceilings, the restoration and cleaning of our beautiful mosaics, which have been produced by world famous artists, the installation of a new heating, lighting, fire and sound systems, as well enhancing the many precious shrines in the Church.

To achieve what is in these detailed design plans will of course be subject to finance being available. We are still some distance away from having the funds needed to complete the inside of the Church but we are confident that with your help and prayers, we will be in that position in the near future.

We are acutely aware of the tough economic times that prevail around us all at this time. Yet we know that it is in such tough times that great things have been achieved in the past.

To those people who were able to help the last time, many thanks again.

For those who can help us now to restore the inside of the Church we'd be grateful if you would consider taking out a standing order which will run from now until 2011.

With sincere appreciation for your generous support in the past and a promise of remembrance in our community Masses and prayer

* A £5 monthly standing order over 3 years will be worth £180 to us and we can claim an additional 28% through Gift Aid. A £20 standing order will be worth over £920! "
